Growing Together: Our September Glasgrow Farm Experience Day

On 11 September, we welcomed another group to Glasgrow for a hands-on Farm Experience Day. This event provided a wonderful opportunity to step away from the everyday routine, spend time outdoors, and learn more about where our food comes from.

Glasgow is made possible with support from The National Lottery Community Fund, helping us create opportunities for people to learn, connect and get involved in community growing while increasing access to fresh, locally grown produce.
The day began in the greenhouse, where everyone had the opportunity to get involved with some of the practical work that goes into growing food. From working with seedlings and trays to learning about the different stages of growing, it was a relaxed and welcoming environment where people could ask questions, try something new and learn together.
Learning by doing
Our Farm Experience Days are designed to be practical. Rather than simply talking about food growing, participants can get involved themselves, building confidence and developing new skills along the way.
There was plenty of teamwork throughout the morning, with people working alongside one another, sharing conversations and learning more about the care that goes into producing fresh food.
The group also had the chance to explore the growing areas and see some of the produce thriving at the farm.
And, of course, we couldn’t resist taking a closer look at what was growing!
More than growing food
Glasgow is about much more than what we harvest.
Through the project, we want to create opportunities for people to connect with nature, learn practical skills, meet others and take part in something meaningful.
The produce grown at the farm also has a wider purpose, helping us increase access to fresh, seasonal food within the communities supported by The Scottish Pantry Network.
With the countryside surrounding including the locals aka the farms Highland cows and chickens, the volunteers had plenty to explore beyond the greenhouse.
Growing together
Days like this demonstrate exactly why community growing matters. It isn’t only about planting seeds and harvesting vegetables; it’s about creating spaces where people can participate, learn new skills, build confidence and connect with others.
